Torah demonstration

Nursery World, 18 December 2003

(Photograph) - Jewish law dictates that the Torah should be meticulously written out by hand, all 304,805 letters of it. So writing a single Torah can take up to a year. Scribe Michael Haffner from Crumpsall is one of a handful of people in the Manchester region to practise this revered craft. He gave a scribal demonstration to children at the Jewish Museum in Manchester for the Hidden Talents Festival, a celebration of everyday living that links cultures. Photo by Pauline Neild
