Nursery World, 5 April 2001

Revenue funding per pupil in England has increased between 1997/98 and 2001/02 by an average of £540, the Department of Education's annual report shows. Other key achievements in the past year include a cut in infant class sizes - in September 2000 two per cent of children were in classes taught by only one teacher, compared with 11 per cent a year earlier and 29 per cent in 1997. Education secretary David Blunkett said, 'This report illustrates the substantial extra resources provided to education since 1997 and the benefits they have helped deliver in improved standards.'
