Comparison of sadness, anger, and fear facial expressions when toddlers look at their mothers Research suggests sad expressions may be more beneficial to children than other emotions. Facial expressions associated with distress were examined in 24-month-old toddlers during four episodes as well as during looks to their mothers. They expressed sadness more frequently and with more intensity than other emotions only during looks to their mothers. This indicates toddlers use particular emotional displays to elicit support from the social environment.
