The average child in Britain sees between 20,000 and 40,000 television adverts a year, according to the report The Commercialisation of Childhood by think-tank Compass. It suggests that children are increasingly influenced and manipulated by marketing and advertising techniques. The report cites studies which have found that 70 per cent of three-year-olds recognise the McDonalds restaurant chain symbol, while only half know their own surname.
