A child's neighbourhood and pre-school peer group at age seven has the biggest impact on their cognitive development, while their parents' education, family size and mother's age are the 'background variables' that are most strongly related to cognitive development at age five, according to a research team at the University of Bristol. Their study Up to Seven: family background and child development up to age seven, from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, is available at www.dfes.gov.uk/research.
