The charity WaterAid, which provides water and sanitation for some of the world's poorest people, has appealed for 10,000 more signatures on its 'Flush out poverty' petition before the end of June. So far, more than 23,000 people have signed the petition that challenges the Department for International Development to invest 10 per cent of its aid budget on clean water and sanitation. As many as 1.1bn people - one sixth of the world's population - do not have clean water and 2.4bn lack adequate sanitation.
