The School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme is part of the Five a Day programme to increase fruit and vegetable consumption. Under the scheme, all four- to six-year-old children in local authority-maintained infant, primary and special schools will be entitled to a free piece of fruit or vegetable each school day. In September, carrots and tomatoes were added to apples, pears, bananas and easy-peel citrus.
