The extended schools proposals were dubbed 'Kelly hours' after education secretary Ruth Kelly received a mixed response from the national press last week. The Daily Telegraph described the prospect of 'Kelly hours' as 'chilling' and said that if the Government 'genuinely wanted to give parents the choice between looking after their own children and passing the buck to the state's appointees, it would tax them less'. The Independent said, 'Extended school opening should be a convenience that adds to the quality of life, not another excuse for parents to spend less time with their children.'
