Classroom assistants in Scotland are earning as little as £6 an hour, according to a survey by the Equal Opportunities Commission, which branded their low pay 'a national disgrace'. An investigation into the role and status of Scotland's 15,000 classroom assistants by EOC Scotland reveals that classroom assistants are on the lowest local authority grades, earning annual salaries of £7,000 to £10,000, equivalent to £5.68 to £7.58 an hour.
