CWDC launches home-based care course
A new home-based training course for childminders and nannies has been developed by the Children's Workforce Development Council in consultation with the National Childminding Association.
The home-based unit is part of the new Level 3 Diploma for the Children and Young People's Workforce, launched next month, and is available as an introductory course for those preparing to become registered childminders or work as a nanny. It is also open to those studying for the diploma, and provides four out of the 65 credits needed for the full qualification.
The diploma is designed to supersede other level 3 qualifications. According to the CWDC, it will 'bring clarity to the workforce and help the sector meet the Government target that all staff be qualified to level 3 by 2015.'
Core units of the diploma are based on the common skills, knowledge and values of the children and young people's workforce (Analysis, 29 April 2009).
Ian Dalzell, NCMA interim director of membership and professorial development, said, 'NCMA has worked hard to ensure that this unit meets the needs of the home-based childcare workforce. It is completely flexible, allowing for independent home study, online study, traditional class tutoring or a combination of all three.
'The course comprises seven modules and a Skills for Life assessment, which we feel will help registered childminders and nannies to gain all the relevant knowledge they need to provide a high-quality childcare service.'
The new unit can be accessed through a number of options, including e-learning or classroom sessions, or independent study for those with an existing childcare background.
