Council scales back its Sure Start cuts
Cuts of £140,000 are being made by Brighton and Hove Council to projects for refurbishing buildings used by early years settings.
The local authority initially said that it would be making cuts of £300,000 to its Sure Start Early Years Capital Grant, but last week announced that it had revised the extent to which it would be scaling back the capital projects.
A spokesperson for the council said that 15 capital projects, which are mostly improvements to buildings used by playgroups, are already underway and that only one project would be put on hold.
He said, 'We are working hard to limit the impact of the funding reductions and are being open and honest about how we propose to make savings. The latest news is that the funding reductions to Sure Start are not £300,000 as was thought earlier but £140,000. Work is already well underway to improve efficiency and reduce costs under the council's Value for Money programme and the work we are doing around implementing a new model of service delivery that we have called Intelligent Commissioning.'
Brighton and Hove council was allocated £3m by the previous Government in capital funding for early years settings from 2008 to 2011.
