The latest Government research on early years provision reveals a complex picture, with better qualified staff, more loss-making providers, but a rising numbers of places, says Ruth Thomson.

The total numbers of providers, places and children attending childcare and early years provision all continued on their upward trend in 2007, according to the Government's latest providers' survey.
