NNEBs working as teaching assistants

Is anybody else an NNEB working as a teaching assistant? I am ! I have 12 years experience since doing my NNEB and 2 children and am being paid just £6.02 an hour in a LEA nursery. The head likes to tell visitors that I am an NNEB but only pays as a GTA. I am on a 2 term supply so only get paid when I work so no sick pay etc. We are open mornings only and have 39 children and 3 staff, me, a teaher and a non-qualified GTA who is paid the same as me. I often stay to put up displays etc with no pay. We are meant to do them in class time but as you can imagine with 39 children this is impossible, and I feel, unacceptable and dangerous!Does anybody else have this??

I can not believe the awful conditions and pay. I think the majority of T.A's are housewives who have older children looking for work with school hours and holidays and so are willing to accept these conditions.
T.A.'s can have no contract, no pay rises (even cost of living)and no or very little training.
Was the job you applied for advertised as a NNEB or T.A position?
How would you feel about going home at the end of your hours and not helping to put up displays? as an NNEB you would do this but your pay and conditions would be slightly better. When you feel like you do you begin to resent all the time extra you put in knowing you are being used.

Firstly Nannynic, I think that maybe you should have enquired more about your contract, agreement and terms and conditions, if you havent then I would join the GMT union.I am a TA and I love my job, although I don't have family commitments I can stay on to do extra bits that my need to be done , but this is because I love the job and I have huge respect for the teacher that I work with. I can understand what you are saying about putting up displays etc but work still has to get done. I was a room manager in a nursery and decided that the money and responsibility was'nt worth it, maybe you should think the same? PS I'm not saying that you are'nt fantastic at your job, but I found that every day I came home moaning about my old job and it was tome to move on. Good Luck

Emily8, I am Very pset about what you have written on here about TA's. . When I applied for a job in our local school, it was'nt because I required a job to fit around school hours and holidays. I have lots of qualifications to do with childcare and I also have a degree. I decided that I would leave working in nurseries because of the amount of unqualified/lack of experienced staff. I have a FIXED TERM contract and a pay rise. People should read contracts before leaping into jobs. PS DONT BAD MOUTH TA'S We all work as hard as the teachers.

Hi,I am sorry that I have offended you by what I have written and I am very pleased for you that you are so happy in your job.I do not feel I have bad mothed T.A's who I know do a wonderful job but what I have written is fact from alot of T.A's I know and work with. I think something should be done to improve the pay and conditions. Job applicants do not always get to see job contracts before accepting a job. I know a T.A who has no contract has never had a pay rise and has been working at the same school for several years. She does work for the hours and terms to fit around her children. There is nothing wrong with that but I feel T.A's rights are not heard and often go unnoticed and this should change.
