picking children up

Hey I'm a student doing a child care course and all my teachers tell me that as soon as a child crys they should be picked up and comforted. But in my nursery placement I'm always told not to pick the children up as they are only attention seeking.
can you let me know what you all think on this subject.
thanks.

i'm working in a nursery and i'd say it depends on the child. if they don't normally cry, then yeah, they will need a cuddle. but if it is one that does cry for attention we won't cuddle but we'll find another way of distracting them. i.e. looking at books, dancing, look what (name) is doing. you will get told in college that children need cuddles but also this isn't always practical in a setting. hope this helps.
