I start my new role as pre-school manager on Monday. I am full of enthusiasm and ideas but also feeling a bit like a deer caught in the headlights!
Anyway, I wondered how many of you activiely take part in community events in an effort to raise your public profile? I'm talking about things like volunteering to run a booth for local school/community events in exchange for advertising yourself there with a display and leaflets? I've done this for several years as a childminder (school fairs, children's centre open days, extended schools job fair) as a way to promote my business.
Obviously,it depends upon number of staff available to take time off in order to do it and I need to be in my new setting for a bit first to sort logistics but it's a great way to get your name out there plus prove you have links with the wider community.

Hello.
In my experience word of mouth goes an awful long way. Saying that when it comes to saying goodbye to 50% of your kids in August is quite scary! At this time of year we always found a few adverts in local papers, perhaps a stall at the local schools summer fete, notices in your local supermarket were enough to boost numbers for September. I think you will find in reality there is so much to get done day to day that (as you mentioned) it would be unlikely to be able to spare staff to do an awful lot more! Also making friends with the Reception class teachers is usually a winner - if they know you turn out children who can sit on the carpet, toilet themselves and wipe their own noses they will want all their kids from you and recommend you to anyone who asks!

we do lots of community stuff as a nursery, we have a float in the local carnival every year. This is a lot of hard work but it is all free publicity. We have a parent committee who do a lot of the organising but all staff are expected to come on the day and we get time back for it.This year we came 2nd so next year we aim to win! we also have a fun day in the grounds and all staff have to man stalls and again we get time back. We also have very strong links with the school across the road and the teachers visit before school starts. we also have links with the church too.

We too enter the local carnival, we recently invited the press and 2 local staff from our local sainsbury's store to show off the equipment be bought with our sainsbury's active kids vouchers, this was very successful and we got a full page spread in the local paper. We have also invited the press to sports day, nativities, sometimes they let us down if something bigger has happened locally, but we have taken our own photos and sent them in with a brief description of what went on. hope this helps.
