Thank you for your replies, dont get me wrong the nursery in question is very good and all staff are really good at their jobs. Its very un-nerving and enough to make you paranoid I don't get involved but like you you say its kind of an occupational hazard!

hiya, i was deputy manager in a nursery and found the bitchness terrible. As soon as one person left the room they were in the line of attack. i Tried team building exercises, nights out but the bitchness never failed to come back on monday morning. The bitchness did then develope into staff bullying so a new team was arranged but i see it happening again a remark here and a remark there.

If the management don't try to be 'friends'with their staff hopefully all the bitching can be directed upwards - this makes for a 'them and us' culture but it bonds all the 'us's' together far better than team games unfortunately.
Make sure all the nasty stuff is shouldered by management - hiring, firing, disciplining.
