'Acceptable Language'

This is so true there is more and more words getting banned and being replaced by other (worse in my eyes)words which mean exactly the same thing. By doing this it is confusing the children and if they do happen to say 1 of these words their think they have doing sumthin really wrong wen sum1 tells them not to say it every again. They think it is a bad word that no1 is aloud to say not just them, no other children or adults.

'she's a silly billy isn't she?'

or

'that is very silly, do not do that'

this is what children hear everyday.
what are they meant to think??

we are not aloud to say 'naughty', but parents dicipline their children at home in this way...so its very confusing for the children when we do not say it, but use 'silly'.

We avoid using those words by saying things like:
"That's not a very nice thing to do because....."
"Don't do that because..."

I believe in explaining to even the younger babies the reason why you're telling them not to do it. It does work, majority of the time!!!

Example: one of our older babies walked through the room of the younger babies and took a toy off one of them, making them cry.
We said: "That's not very nice, you made (name) cry, taking toys makes people feel sad. Can you give it back?"
This particular child gave the toy back to the baby, and then gave them a cuddle.

One of the reasons behind not saying things such as silly and naughty is because you would be labbeling the child, as are the terms good boy/girl. Its much better to praise them by saying for instance "well done for picking up those bricks" and concentrating on the right actions and not the wrong actions. However saying that we cant let the children get away with murder!! There are ways and means of getting your point across to the children by using positive and not negative language, and im sure every nursery nurse/nursery has their own way of doing this!!!
