Qualifications???
Qualifications???

Hi,
I'm currently in a job I basically don't like. I'm looking at childcare courses that I can study while working. This is so I can move over to childcare as I know I am happiest when working with kids. Can anyonee tell me if this course is actually any use? It is at http://www.s1homelearning.com/Courses/SocialCare/ChildDayCare.aspx
I'm thinking of going for it but want to make sure it is actually worthwhile. I'm aiming initially for a nursery assistant role, and hopefully moving onto a nursery nurse role. Anyone in charge of a nursery who is willing to comment? Please let me know ASAP as I'm eager to get started.
Cheers.

This course will provide a stepping stone to a career as a Nursery Assistant or Child Minder and command salaries of up to £28,000* per annum.
lol, i would like to know where. Total jobs forgot to mention that salaries start at 10,000.
I know that this really isn't much help to you but i am sure someone will be along to answer your questions.

hi do you have any childcare experience/qualifications, if not you would probably be better off doing the s/nvq level 2/3 you would be paid a wage and be trained at the same time.

Just a little word of advice that I wish somene had shared with me, if you are thinking of a career change be prepared to struggle to find work if you have no previous experience of working with children. The level and quality of your childcare qualification does not always mean you are going to find the right role. I know people who have no qualifications but have done lots of supply and temporary work are seen as much more employable than those with high qualifications. I and several of my friends, who have left uni with an early years degree, are constantly faced with negative comments due to the fact that we have little experience. If you can either complete a qualification that is work based or try to do some supply work whilst you are studying. Voluntary work can show that you are dedicated but is not recognised by all settings. I have a friend who was offered a job as a nursery assistant but was only offered min. wage and told that the job entailed cleaning the premises and cooking and it would be a nine hour shift with only a half four break if staff ratios could be met (not a guarantee). After so much study she was so disheartened that she went back to her old profession. Hope this is useful and doesn't dishearten you!!!

Forget this qualification.
You do not need to be qualified to get a job as a nursery assistant, suprisingly enough. And lack of experience does not necessarily bar you from getting a job.
How you sell yourself is most important.
Back to this qualification, it will cost you over £300, if you do an NVQ you can be funded by Train to Gain or the Early Years Partnership and it won't cost you anything or max £100. If you can get a placement albeit on mimimum wage, and don't expect anything else, your employer may well pay any outstanding amount.
The statement in this qualification spiel that you can earn salaries up to £28000 is complete and utter NONSENSE !!!!!!!!!

Its a Distance Learning company who make their money by selling people a dream. Turns into a nightmare when you realise you have fallen for the advertising and have signed a credit agreement. I know as I used to work for one, money was good though :-)

I qualified as NNEB in 1991 and have been told where i work at present that as of 1993 my qualification doesn't excist? Can you tell me if this is right and whether there is a refresher course to take. I feel a bit cheated that i went to College for 2 years and have now work experience of 18 years and yet not classed as qualified. Please help me!!!

utter tosh !!!
Your qualification is still valid. If you have been working in childcare for the last 18 years, you are up to date with changing practice, you have nothing to worry about. (if it makes you feel any better I did mine in 1977 !!!! and it's still valid)
If you have been out of childcare for some time you may be advised to update with a L3, but if you have been working you are ok.

Hi
An NNEB is classed as a level 3 qualification and is sufficent for you to open and manage a nursery.
The degree is also ok but backed up with the NNEB will put you in a better postion as most degrees are theory based whereas as the NNED or NVQ etc is based on knowledge and practice.
