OLD NNEB's

OLD NNEB's

Many of you will be aware of the problems that us old style NNEB's are having, I have been told by the PLA that after 20 years my NNEB is out of date and I need to retrain, I have spent the last year trying to find out the situation. The department for education have told me that I only need to top up in certain areas and that I am a high level 2 working towards a level 3, I have spoken to many people and they have all come back with different answers. OFSTED have told me I need to do APEL the deparment for education have told me that I don't. I am fed up with going round in circles. On my travels around the internet I have found various forums and voiced my opinions and have found many unhappy disillusioned child care workers with old style qualifications who are being told that they need to retrain. I think experience plays a huge part in our job and think that should be recognised. I am not opposed to taking on short top up courses and do indeed try to keep my knowledge up to date but I refuse to redo a whole new level 3 qualification. Experience teaches you so much that a college course can't , I do my job so much better now than when I first qualified because I have years of experience behind me.If I had taken a long career break then I could understand the need to take on more training.
The department of education who have been brilliant have told me that they don't want to lose people like me but unfortunately after speaking to many different people that is exactly what is happening.
A group of us have decided enough is enough and we are trying to drum up some attention to our plight. We are faxing our concerns to our local MP's on
www.faxyourmp.com
If anyone out there wants to help please feel free to do so . people are starting to get replies so it is working but we need as many people as possible to join in. If you want to know any more details then please ask, I would be very interested to hear of anyone elses experiences regarding this situation.

Hi, I;m new to this website! \i've just read your posting. I completed my NNEB 9years ago, and I am just completing my ADCE, which is a brilliant course that has brought me up to date with topics such as child protection. It is also a level 4 course and equivalent to the first year of a degree. Though I understand that not everyone wants to or has the time to study part time, I can highly recommend the course.

Hi, I've just conmpleted an ADCE. It's a CACHE course - Advanced Diploma in Childcare & Eduacation, and is the equivalent to the first year of a degree in Early Childhood Studies. I studied at college for 2 years, 2 night a week. If you look at the CACHE website they'll give information about the modules, but I think that the colleges decide which modules they teach. We did child protection, children and families under stress, legal & social context of services, early years curric, lang & lit, and a dissertation. It was hard going but I think it was an excellent course as the subjects were taught in great detail. I hope this has been useful.

I have just been informed of the change with the NNEB qualification.I too am from the old school, qualifying in 1989.I have worked continuously since leaving college,14 years of that in my present employment.I agree with 'hotgoss'comments about having to retrain and that your experience should be considered.I am actually starting a foundation degree in September so I can progress into teaching.Does a course like this count towards retraining or is there a specific type of course?I would like to know.

I AM AN NNEB,HAVING QUALIFIED IN 1988.IT DOES SEEM UNFAIR THAT AFTER TWO YEARS OF SOLID WORK,THE QUALIFICATION IS BECOMING 'UNRECOGNISABLE' AND THAT MORE TRAINING IS REQUIRED. I CARRIED ON TO DO A'LEVEL CHILD PSYCHOLOGY,TEN YEARS AGO AND HAVE NOW JUST COMPLETED MY FIRST YEAR OF 'FOUNATION DEGREE IN EARLY YEARS'TO BECOME A SENIOR PRACTITIONER.IT HAS BEEN A HARD YEAR,HAVING A FULL TIME JOB AND THREE KIDS,BUT ALL OF THE GIRLS IN THE GROUP HAVE HELPED EACH OTHER.GOOD LUCK WITH SEPTEMBER,ITLL BE A CHALLENGE,BUT A WORTHWHILE ONE.
