As a nursery worker i just wanted a few opinions on the use of 'timeout'. We have just introduced it in our nursery and so far it is working really well, any hints or tips?

I think the use of 'time out' is very effective n a nursery setting, as it give the child time to think about what ever they were doing and it also sets an example for the other children. However my boss has recently banned this as she thinks that it is 'segregating' the child.
I continue to do it however as it has proven itself.

I believe that time out is not good for children as like your manager has said, you are segregating the child from others and from their activities. Why not try other methods instead of time out like finding out why the child has behaved in a particluar way by having a one to one with the child or let them get out their anger through creative activites.

It’s all very well saying that time out is segregation and bad for the child but private one to one chats don't always work and if a child continues to do whatever negative behavior they are doing what else are we supposed to do. Giving the child something creative to do in the long run yes is a good idea but if the child is being disruptive during an activity lets say story time and I then I let them do a painting activity to let out there anger or aggression that child will think that every time they are disruptive they will be given something fun to do. In my setting if a child is being disruptive I send them away from the activity that they are disrupting usually into the story corner and let them calm down for a few min before talking to them. I find this kind of time out works wonders.

I completely agree with you jrennie1984. I run a large pre-school and find that it only takes one 'disruption' from one of the children to cause chaos. It seems to work best to speak to the child, let them sit quietly and calm down for a few minutes and them telling them they can join the others if they think they can sit nicely blah blah blah . . .
Personally I think sometimes a few minutes help the child to calm down and unwind helps a great deal!

Please be careful sending the timeout child to the story corner as this can lead to a dislike of books and in our society we need to encourage storytime and books as an enjoyable time
