Multi-cultural ideas

Hi all, as a result of our Ofsted inspection we need to provide more multi-cultural experiences/images etc for our under threes, especially the babies. We already have posters, dolls, dressing up clothes, appropriate skin coloured paint, chalks etc.
Does anyone have anymore suggestions?

That sounds quite alot to me.Maybe books, mirrors for self image, musical instruments. Also have a look through a catalogue to see what they offer.

Hi Tara4,

We have multicultural food for our play kitchen. We have woks as well as saucepans, chopsticks as well as forks and knifes (though these need close guarding to prevent any accidents!!!)and a whole range of food such as noodles, samosas, spring rolls and rice. We got these from either Galt or SBS catalogue, cant remember which!! You could also try offering multicultural foods at snack times if you dont already.

You do sound like you are already offering a good range of multicultural activities and experiences for your children so well done.

Hope this helps!

What about prop boxes - I use these for specific cultures.

Inside my Chinese Box I have books, fans, chopsticks, wok, clothes, puzzles as well as craft ideas made by the children eg lanterns, card games based around the different years (dog, cat, pig etc). This for me avoids the problem each year of wondering how to celebrate festivals - children can access them at any time and know what is in them that can be looked at again and again.

Hi,
I have found a great shop in Birmingham called the festival shop. You can go on line and order a catalogue.

Hi Tara,
Do you have any parents at you setting from different cultural backgrounds? If so, they are a good source of ideas & some may be willing to come in & talk to the children. Many are happy to come dresed in traditional costumes, or to share stories, music & cooking activities from their culture with the children.

Cbeebies website has a section called "World Stories." The stories are in the native language and also in english. Ive printed them out and made them into books for our children with the native language and english side by side. Best of all its free!!
