O.K how about making the birth to 3 matters fit in with you instead of the other way around? How about that for an idea!

We all naturally offer a wide variety of activities and learning takes place all the time. If we free ourselves up from so much intense planning we can make the most of learning opportunities that occur naturally and that stem from the childrens interests.

With our foundation stage we listed all areas offered daily and fitted the ELG`s into them, and guess what we cover them all! We do the same with the Birth to 3. This way every area is offered daily. Childrens records track learning and you just plan any extra activities you feel are needed to link in with what the children need.

Does anyone else out there work this way?

hiya,iv worked in two new nurseries within the past three years. Iv found that with new nurseries, you cant relly predict how they will fill up. Usually baby places fill the quickest, but t really depends on the area, what you offer, your staff and how much your willing toadvertise. Where in the north west are you setting up.keep me posted on how you do.

i work in the 2-3 year old room, but i used to work in the baby room. simple activities like blowing bubbles can be used or for the older babies ie over 12 months use warm water with bubbles in and let them play in that. if nursery allows it give them messy play i.e custard on the high chair tray, not alot but enough for them to experience different textures. this could come under skilful communicator, strong child, or competent learner. asses the child on how the child reacts when touching something out of the ordinary.

At my nursery we do the same we make up lots of activities for each componant and aspect and number them and rotate them. In a month all the aspects and conponants are covered. Just takes time to start off with once its done its done we aren not completely done yet.

If you are doing a creative activity make sure that you don't specify which media you want the children to use ie that they shoud an umbrella blue. you should let them have access to all types of painting, collaging crayons etc and let them choose how they want to decorate tehir umbrella.

Hi,

We are just starting to look at Birth to Three in our setting and i'm having difficulty taking it all in. We haven't had any training as yet. Our Early Years Support Teacher has advised us to have a scrapbook for each child under 3 and use it store obs, any of their pictures, photos etc. Does anyone else record like this? I can't see how that would really cover the framework.

Any advice or help with planning would be very much appreciated. Thanks. Kelly x

Hi
I am based in a nursery in Wales and presently we do not work within the Birth-3 Matters Framework, but I feel that it would be most beneficial to the children in my care. I have the pack but I am not allowed access to any courses seen as I reside in Wales.
Please could someone email me any examples or copies of weekly plans or anything else that would help me.
Thanx in advance

birth to three plannning?

this is a lovely framework for under threes.

there is no planning!!!!

basically you let the children play with what they like and observe them and build on their experiences with activities such as painting, gluing etc.

you then mark off on the sheets when they have reached the milestones.

the room should be set up with the same toys and equipment each day for continuity and reassurance for the children. occasionally get new toys as well.

there should be childrens own work displayed (not done by staff)

this is simple, there is no need to spend hours on paperwork.

anyone unsure get on your local authority training.

if you want to do planning then you need to work in the foundation stage! thats a nightmare.....
good luck everyone.

birth to 3 matters - 29-03-06 20:27

by: newsetting

Hi Scarlett,
I personally believe that all settings should do planning for Birth to Three as well as Foundation Stage. I think that the framework is open to much mis-interpretation by practitioners. I understand that it is "experiences" that matter and not the end result (ie: the experience of painting, feeling different textures, choosing different materials) However, I do not see any problem in GENTLY directing childrens play.

We have different toys out each day in our rooms. This is to make sure that the children dont get bored, and also to provide them with the resources to get these learning "experiences."

Our BT3 planning shows a grid with the days of the week across the top and the four BT3 elements down the side. Each week we try to show on our planning how our activities that we are doing with the children are meeting the BT3 areas of development. For example, today we sat down with the junk modelling and let the children make cars (we have a transport theme at the moment) Of course the children all made their own interpretation of what a "car" looks like. No-one was told that they were wrong! They still had the learning experience of making, sticking and gluing, but we added another dimension to it by asking them to interpret what a car looked like to them. Surely if we didnt do that then our activities would become dull and repetative. There is only so much Free painting you can do!

If you dont do any planning and have any formal paperwork, how would you show OFSTED or parents that you are meeting the BT3 outcomes?

by: scarlett

we also do similar to you. what i meant was it is not as laborious or difficult as the foundation stage. we also do gluing, baking, malleable, and have different activities,to keep childrens interest.
we have for the physical development for eg 1 x week the soft play out another week the ball pool, another week the tents, etc
we just found the training from the Early years really excellent.

by: Frances

Hi Jo

In response to your request for weekly plans. I think the most important thing to remember about birth to three is that it is a framework not a curriculum, which you do have to put some organisation into but most of it you are probably doing already. It is about how you document this that is important. I would take a step back and look at your environment, what is it like for a baby in your care? Think about routines, such as nappy changing where you can continue to interact with a baby and stimulate their development. I would start with what is accessible. Can the babies reach items and self select off the shelves? This is what I call the continuous provision as it is available all the time. Then think about what you set up every morning, when I ran my baby rooms, I always put out two or three little areas with interesting things for them to do - these are enhancements to what you are providing daily. Then think about what you need to supervise such as paint, water, sand etc., as I wouldn't neccessarily make these accessible all of the time, wanting to ensure the children are safe and there is an adult on hand to support the children. This is what I would call supervised provision. It doesn't matter how you set it out or what you call it, you don't need to link it to a theme, I would suggest you don't as this will give you more flexibility to change things or use spontaneous opportunities. Some settings focus on one component or aspect per plannig period. What I do think is important is that you observe your children and use these as your starting point for developing your provision. In this way you link the learning environment to what the babies are doing and what they need to do next. I wish you the best of luck with it. Frances

You can purchase from QEd,. www.qed.uk.com a paperback book by Dr.Hannah Mortimer published in 2003 called "Trackers 0-3". The book is designed for you to track when a child achieves a development. Very simple. One book per child. The book is divided into the 4 areas of learning and sub components. The areas covered should be able to give you inspiration towards devising activities. ISBN 1-898873-34-8.

I am currently studying a foundation degree in early childhood studies. For my special study I am focussing on the effectiveness of birth to 3 in aiding childrens learning. Also for my own personal work benifit I am trying to get my head around how to best implement it in my seting. I work with children fro 18 months to 3 years old. I had two years of working with 3-4 year olds and then I went to work with 2-3s with no training or experince of birth to 3 framework.

I would appreciate any copies of planning sheets and advice on this. Also dose any one know of any newspaper articles on the subject?

I have put together a 5 week rolling rota coverig activities and toys that can set up for a free flowing and free choice learning environment with a weekly sheet covering an activity each day for the framework.

Do you think we need to plan a weeky plan or just the environment and how would you do it?
