Hi, i used to be a day nursery manager, but went into training and am now not working. I used to love my job - i lived, breathed and ate my job, i was out every saturday buying books, spending most of my spare time drawing pictures for colouring, cuting shapes for sticking, planning...the list goes on - but you know what? the best job in the world!!!!
No, we wont ever get the pay we deserve - basically, we are surrogate parents for 8 hours a day 51 weeks a year. we sometimes have more input into a child's life then the parents do - but hey, dont get me wrong, im not blaming parents for leaving the children with us - its a tough old life out there!
Anyhow, i love the job - just wish i could find a part time managers post (have own child to look after now), sadly tis not meant to be :O(

take care all
Traci xx

hi i work for a private nursery in a very big chain, i love my job and all 16 of the babies in my baby room. the only things i dont like are the huge amounts of paper work, my company has its own curriculum as well as birth to three and its is very hard to find time to cross refernce an observation with both guidelines. alos i agree with everyone else the wages are a pittance for the jobs we do and are sometimes very litle appreciated for our hard work, saying that though when i went i to childcare the first thing i learnt is that childcare is a labour of love not money . london

I work in a nursery which is part of the biggest chain in England. Myself and my collegues get bogged down with the amount of paperwork, what ever happened to just spending time with the babies?Because given a choice that is what parents would want, infact my parents are shocked when i show them their childs profile they think they are in a nursery to play and learn to be sociable.Meanwhile we are suffering from policy and procedure overload.

Hi Traci,
Thank you for your reply. You were obviously loved your job as a Day nursery manager. What made you decide to go in to training?
How did you recruit and retain good practitioners?
You are welcome to email me at margaret.simms@ntu.ac.uk if you prefer.
Best wishes Margaret

Hello Jacqui,
You sound quite disillusioned. Are you qualified to level 3. Are you a manager? Do you feel that you have had appropriate training to cope with all of this paperwork or have you had to pick up these skills as you go along? Which chain are you working for? Do you think that his is a common problem wherever you work. Do you happen to work in Nottingham City?
You are welcome to emial me at Margaret.simms@ntu.ac.uk to carry on the conversation if you prefer.
Thank youfor your help.
Best wishes
Margaret

Hello Ocean Eyes,
Thank you for your help with my research.
How many staff work in the Baby room on a regular basis? DO you feel that your training/qualification prepares you for the amount of paperwork that you have to do? How much of your time is spent with the babies and how much on the paperwork?
What would you say your job is worth? How does this reflect your actual pay?
You are welocme to email me at margaret.simms@ntu.ac.uk to carry on the conversation if you prefer.
Best wishes Margaret

Hi Baby_girl,
I was really interested to hear your comments. You obviously love to work with children. Do you feel that your training prepared you for the paper work and planning?

Perceived lack of respect from management is a common occurence. How/have you managed to resolve the issue with you Deputy Manager?
Do you happen to work in a Nottingham nursery?
You are welcome to email me on margaret.simms@ntu.ac.uk to continue the conversation/.
Thank you so much for your contribution to my research.
Best wishes Margaret

Hi Clayre,
Thank you for your contribution. How many staff are based in your baby unit?
how are you finding Birth to Three Matters? Yes, Baby sign language is wonderful is it being taught to trainees in colleges in Scotland?
What you do thin would be a fair wage for the job that you do? How do you ensure that you recruitm and retain the best practitioners?

You are welcome to email me at margaret.simms@ntu.ac.uk to continue the converstaion if you prefer.
Regards
Margaret

Dear Margaret,
I work in a large Montessori school in Ladbroke Grove. I work with children from the age of 2 and half to 5 years old. I absolutely love my job and the staff who work there. I feel that sometimes we are just glorified babysitters. Some parents do not treat us very well and are apt to jump to conclusions.

Love Anna

I have recently completed a 2year diploma course in child care and education with the hopes of a good enjoyable job with children, i love helping to develop their education, i didnt realise how poorly paid early years practioners are... lets all hope that the governments realise how hard we work and how dedicated we our to our work, those with more experience in this area especially, and get the pay we deserve!

hi jcab,
Thanks for your help.
Did you find out how much nursery nurses are paid after you qualified?
What sort of careers guidance did you have before you did the course?
Do you think that it is the government who need to realise how hard staff work or is it up to the private day nurseries to pay more if they think staff are worth it?

Best wishes
Margaret
