I know that child minding is different to teaching in an educational setting, but why not topic your time? For example, at this time of year run new-life topics: so, instead of playing shops, vary this by making a pet shop, get the children in your care to make food for the animals through 3-d modelling, label the shop for literacy dev, go on a walk to look for animals for knw&understanding of the world, sing animal songs together, play different, yet appropriate classical or other music for the children to move to and pretend tht they are animals. There are loads of topics to chose from to add some structure and diversity. In the summer you could play travel agents, when doing fairytales you could have a castle or a shoe shop etc. At Christmas this year in my class I made with the children, a santas grotto. The chidren write a list to santa, post it. Santas helpers came to collect the lists, read them, made the gift using empty boxes, wrapped them with tissue paper and delivered them to the houses! So much can be gained! I know it sounds a lot of work, but i dont see why child minders cant run topic work too! Its fun for you too!
