We too enter the local carnival, we recently invited the press and 2 local staff from our local sainsbury's store to show off the equipment be bought with our sainsbury's active kids vouchers, this was very successful and we got a full page spread in the local paper. We have also invited the press to sports day, nativities, sometimes they let us down if something bigger has happened locally, but we have taken our own photos and sent them in with a brief description of what went on. hope this helps.
