Hitting

Hi I am working in a private nursery in Ireland with one to two year olds. The ratio here for that age group is one adult to six children. The behaviour of the children in my group is extremely aggressive. They are hitting constantly and some of the ones that can walk are attacking the ones that don't walk constantly. I recently read in the Observer that children under the age of two who are cared for in group settings develop antisocial tendencies and it certainly seems to be the case here. When they start they are perfectly sweet but after a couple of weeks here they are all showing this behaviour any thoughts?

why is the ratio so high, does it differ to english ratios? Also try reading the book toddler taming, there are some great ways to combat behaviour and also point out which behaviour is normal and to be expected

had a think. Do you not think that if the ratio is so high that this sort of behaviour could be attention seekeing? With so many children and so many chores is it the case that the only time the childdren are getting staff to themselves is when they misbehave. I know this may sound obvious but do they get just as much attention for good behaviour?

Is it possible for you to split the group further from the ones who do walk and the ones that don't.
Also, try behaviour management. if they do hit sit them away from the group at the side. I know this sounds a bit extreme, but it does work, believe me! it will also show the newer children that it isn't acceptable to hit others.
