Hi - I ve recently moved to a new setting and was just wondering about the number of hours that different nursery staff work. In particular hours on contact with the children. Do those in a supervisory role have time for paperwork? How many hours a day are staff expected to be with the children?

hi,
I've recently become a deputy manager, and although a lot of my time is spent in the office doing paperwork, fees etc, I do my hardest to ensure I still spend some time with the children. I spend time with them at the beginning and end of each day, at lunchtimes, and I try to visit each group for 20-30 minutes to say hello and take part in their activities. This isn't possible every day but I do it as many times as I can.
In a few weeks I will be taking small groups of children away from their groups to do small group work.
Myself and my other senior colleagues work 42 1/2 hrs a week and my other staff work 37 hours. All my staff get time throughout the days for their paperwork (reviews / planning, etc).
Hope this helps answer your question.

Yes- thank you. So- in your setting would some staff work in shifts say 8.00- 5.00pm/ 9.00-6.00 pm?

hi, we're open from 7.30 - 6. Staff do 37 hours throughout week, so on monday may do 8.30 - 12.30, then 8 - 5.30 for other days (just an example). Staff stay on shift hours for one month and then they may change.

Hi helen613,

The average working day for Nursery Nurses these days is 8 a day, that is a 40 hour week.Even in a supervisory role you would be expected to be with the children for that time, unless your numbers were low and you could be out of ratio. Unfortunately very few will get non contact time to do planning, paperwork etc, you are expected to do it in your daily routine, ie sleep times, or to take it home. Unfortunately, nursery nurses do not usually have the luxury that teachers do with non contact time.

hi,
at the nursery where i work, the keyworkers and senior nursery nurse work 35 hours a week, either working 7:30 - 3:30, 10:00 - 6:00, or anything in between, we also have nursery assistants that work 30 hours a week, and we have 2 assistants who work 4 hours a day. our shifts change every two weeks. we try to take at least an hour a week away from the children to do the planning for each room, but this is not always possible.

Hi,

My staff all work 40 hours a week. The Room Leaders/Supervisors work three 12 hour days (7am to 7pm) and one four hour day to make up their 40 hours. They then have the rest of the four hour day and the following day off. At the moment the supervisors have about 5 hours a week non-contact time but generally this is about 2 hours a week. This time is for planning, evaluations etc. The rest of my staff work 40 hours a week divided over 4 days (8am-6pm) with one full day off a week.
