I am currently doing Foundation Degree and one of our first assigments is a seminar/debate , taking one of the early childhood educational theorists, in my case I have chosen John Bolby and realting to my current policies and paractice! I find his attachment theory interesting and want to find out more about how can realate to todays practice/policies Can you help with any ideas etc?

I guess with policies it can link to the settling in procedure with children when leaving their parents/carers.
Practice, it can link in with helping children to form relationships with staff so that it makes the initial separation with the parents etc easier. Also due to the attachment styles the children have with their parents it make affect their behaviour and social/emotional development, so this is something which may either be an issue or something you can use to month the child forward in these areas of development and with there stepping stones.

From college work I did on my NC course the main thing I remember about linking Bolby's theories to practice was the key worker system which helps both young children and their carers cope with the move from home to Nursery. Also being aware of his theories makes us aware of what a child and their carers are going through and how to help them through the settling in period. I also remember young children having their comforting toys with them.

Hi there,
I have recently been doing some study in this area. Attachment theory has really influenced the keyworker system approach and good practice regarding relationships with parents/ carers. Also transition procedures and generally the ways in which we make children feel secure: warm inviting room, how we greet children each morning etc. An interesting perspective is to look at Steve Biddulph's view (more recently in the headlines) as he basically agrees with Bolwby but in a modern context of day nurseries.
