well i think u should look elsewhere. i finished college and started work in a hospital creche 2weeks later. the pay is very good. im only 20 and for a nursery nurse im on almost £7.00p/h. plus i get the payrise at the same time as everyone else, but with the nhs u also get increments for 5 years so kind of get 2payrises in a year. most of the people i was at college with work in private day nurseries for very little and one is a team and room leader and she is on less than i am. so hav a look at ur local hospital with creche facilities and put ur name down to go on the bank, it'll be worth it if u get a job. good luck with whatever u decide to do xx

yes, childcare is not the best paid job in the world, but surely you knew the rates of pay before you decided to train? you are obviously only under 22 so cannot expect to receive the same remmuneration as an experienced practitioner of many years standing. at our place we start level 2 off at minimum wage level 3 at £5 and Supervisors at £6. yes it should be more butthe nurseries can only charge so much to the parents, so the wages will always remain below what we we would expect to receive for the duties we actually have to do. im glad though that we now have mim wage, years ago(20+) i used to work 40-55 hours per week for £1/£2 an hour. stay with the job if you love it and are good at it. the wages will go up eventually. maybe if you did some more training courses in the future you could go to your boss and ask for a pay rise? good luck

Yes, I was fully aware of the rates of pay when I decided to train for the level 3 National Diploma in Child Care and Education. I was researching the rates of pay before I began this course and most of my resources were informing me that for a level 3 qualified Nursery Nurse with no experience would start out on £5.00 p/h not the £4.10 that I am currently on. Another person has just recently become employed at our Nursery and is earning more than myself for the simple fact that she is older than me, she's not even qualified, I find this a little disheartening, as I have done the two years training for this job and age is denying me a decent wage. If I were to become employed at your workplace I would be on at least £5.00p/h as I am level 3 qualified. Also, I'm classed as a room supervisor, yet I am still on the same wages as other Nursery Nurses who are not supervisors. I was told that my wages would increase when more children came into the Nursery,as it turns out I am on the same wage now with a full Nursery as I was on when we had 5 children, yes this is something that I am going to be taking up with my employer, as it stands now I feel that Nursery Nurses should be paid more at the start of the careers purley because of the intense training that we have had to complete to gain the 'Nursery Nurse' Title. I'm simply having my say.

well, you certainly should get more wages than the other nursery nurses, regardless of your age if you are a supervisor, supervising these staff! you go to your employer....

There is a national minimum wage which is designed to ensure that you at least earn a minimum amount depending on your age. These amounts must be paid by employers or they are in breach of the law. If you have access to the internet, type in minimum wage and let your search engine do the rest. From October 2005 the minimum wage is 4.85 or 5.05 depending on your age.

Hi,

Payment of £4 is not right. It is against the national minimum wage structure.

Ask your employer about this!

Thanks everyone for your comments.
I have been on the following site to find out what my wage should be in accordance with my age...as I am only turning 21 this sunday i should only be on £4.10, my emploer informed me that my wages will not be going up in October with everyone elses due to my age, but from this sit my wages do increase to £4.25 in October so I will be informing my employer of this.
