Hi everyone. I am a senior nusery nurse and i am having trouble adapting to the birth to three matters system. I work with under 2's and was wondering if anyone can help me. Once i understand how to do it, i have then got to explain it to my co-workers. I will so greatful for any assistance I recieve.

Hi i'm trying to set a nursery up in the north west area but i'm having a bit of trouble iwth costing at the mo' can any one give me a rough clue of how nurseries tend to fill up, i know the area and demand ect will affect this dramatically but just a roughidea wouldbe great.

im finding it difficult to plan activities that meet all the cards. finding it hard to plan enough activites for the younger children in the baby room.

Hi! - I think the reason why we're all having problems with planning is that we're trying to anticipate what OFSTED want from us.
Bearing in mind that children learn all their waking time, and we can say a long list of potential learning in one activity, lets not do the adult directed stuff with these babies! Lets not impose topics on them.
Lets just make sure we have lots of reasources (interesting stuff not necessarily state of the art) available, keep to a workable routine, and make sure there's plenty of time to talk and play with the children. Watch what they do and think about what they might be interested in doing next time.

Lets put OFSTED in their rightful place and think of the 2 year old first - what would they like to do?

If the OFSTED inspector is any good they'll understand and be able to see that what you're doing is right.

Hi, I recently attended a 10 week course by Oldham Early Years, which explained, in depth, how to plan using birth to three. some of the main points included making sure your planning is flexible, so if the children are enjoying an activity then why give it a time limit? Also do not try to stick to topics as what are the children really going to get out of them at such a young age. it also focuses on building strong relationships between carer and child, building confidence and self esteem, and allowing children to select activities for themselves. there is so much information that i could carry on typing all day! hope this helps a little. emma

i find b23m quite hard going but i found devising my own planning sheets helped. try a spider diagram to plan with the team then a grid of the week in view with the four componants add in your activities for each time of the day and post on your notuce board!!

Hi everyone!

Sounds like everyone is unsure on planning with the under three's. I have done alot of work with the Birth to Three Framework, so here are my top tips for planning...... Keep it simple, weekly planning is best. All the planning should start from where the children are at and what their interests are. Do lots of spontaneous observations on all children. Collect these up and use them to inform your planning for the following week. Start your planning by focusing on one Aspect and choose on Component per week. Brainstorm possible experiences as a team. You would only need to choose one experience per day to note on the planning sheet. It would also need to include a section for evaluations. i work in a private day nursery and we do our planning in a slighty different way.
we have a sheet with the activity on it and exactly what we want the children to do. we then have a section on how this meets the birth to three criteria, and what the focus points are. we then write what resources we need and how we can adapt this for other children. the activity is reviewed in a separate book. i can try and emauil you a copy if you want?
