Degree in Day Nursery

Degree in Day Nursery

Hi guys

I'm new here. I have just started working as a nursery nurse in a day nursery and I currently have a BAC (Hons) in Advanced Study of Early Years. I feel more than qualified for this job and am really enjoying it, yet I do not feel as valued by some members of staff as opposed to those who are currently completing their NVQ Level 2. I'm just doing this job to get some practical experience in a day nursery setting, but as my work and effort isn't valued it is really getting down and i'm finding i cannot give my best towards the job.

I'm just wondering what everyones opinions are on the nvq/degree?

I have just completed my degree and have tried for a number of jobs, after interviews I am told I just don't have enough experience, even though I have been working with children for many years now and completed my degree on a part time basis and worked with children whilst completing the degree. Sometimes I just don't think these settings actually want any staff with a degree in their settings. Yes, someone with a NVQ etc may have had a couple of more years hands on experince than me but I have a degree which means I have a lot more knowledge on child protection , child development etc. (Although I know this is not always true!!) It just annoys me when I have spent a lot of blood, sweat and tears getting my degree and I can't get into a job which I really am passionate about compared to some people who get jobs and have only done a childcare qualification as they see it as the easy way out. (Yes some people do think this is the easy way out!!)

Hi,

I have BA hons degree in playwork, i completed it last year and since been working as a parental involvment worker (out reach) for sure start. Experiance is good to have, lucky for me I worked for 5 years in a day nursery before going to uni.  I shall now be stating as a community Nursery nurse which is what I wanted to do!

I would say, stick it for a while ( for experiance) then try and move on, you will earn more money and be appricated if you try and get a community job. Nurserys will not pay you what you are worth!!
