People who help us topic!

Hi everybody.
I work in the pre school room in my nursery and am looking for ideas on the topic of people who help us.
I have not done this topic with children of this age before, and have to admit i have found it an extremely boring topic when i've covered it with 2-3s (compared with the zoo, under the sea, transport etc)
How do i spice it up, and where do i find activity ideas etc?
We are doing this topic as we have a fire engine coming in and want to tie it in with our topic.
Thanks alot.
Laura

I can't believe you have found this topic boring !!!!!!
Your Home corner could be a vet, Drs surgery, dentist, hospital, police station, fire station with all the different items to be used. And all the different situations that can arise, when was the last time the children went to the doctors, has anyone been in hospital and so on and so on. Why do we need to go to the dentist, how do we look after our teeth ?
Are any of your parents Health Visitors, vets etc so you could invite them in to talk to the children about their work.
Post Office - children can write and post their own letters, and someone could be the post man to deliver the letters. Post a letter to youselves - see how long it takes to come back !! Take a walk to the nearest Post Box. Jolly postman story, loads and loads of planning opportunities in that story. (post man do help us - they deliver our letters !!!!!!!!)
Ask the Local Community Police Officer to come and talk to the children about Stranger Danger, road safety, or talk about Lollipop Ladies/men, use outdoor play to teach the children the green cross code, talk about zebra crossings, pelican lights, take the children out for a walk to show them. The fire engine visiting will be soooooooo exciting anyway. Talk about the dangers of playing with matches, fire, hot things etc. Rescuing cats up trees, dogs down drainpipes !!!!!
Dustman - do a bit about recycling, how it is good for the environment. Sorting etc. Wwhat happens to our rubbish ?
This is one of the easiest topics to cover, with so many opportunities to extend learning.
What about farmers who grow our food, look after animals etc etc. Tie it in with a milkman.
Oh the opportunities are endless - think out of the box !!!!!!!
