Hi

I did the CACHE level 2 certificate in childcare at college i had placements and was assessed but i didn't have to do obs but now that i have been working full time for the last 2 years since qualifying i have picked up the basic know how and skills of writing/doing obs.

In my first full time job for our obs all we had to do was write things like;

the time, date and place the obs is taking place and then basically you start your obs. When you actually work in a nursery you have the child's name at the top and usually they have their own little file on them but as you are a college student you are probably not allowed to write the child's name, so put something like child x or whatever.

then basically you have write down everything you see/observe the child doing, college tutors usually like you to be quite specific i.e;  child x is sitting in the book area and is using his left arm to reach out for a book in front of them etc, normally something like this.

If you are observing a certain activity then you'd have to write the time date etc and what they activity is, how many children are and staff involement and then basically write down what you see the child doing that you are observing.

I am now in a big company nursery and i follow the birth to three matters framework so planning/observation are quite different to what i experienced in my last work place but you'll find this out I'm sure once you start working. Once you do one obs and you get the hang of it alongside your tutor's/ placement supervisors feedback/ support you'll find it pretty easy.

like i said I've only given some basic tips from what I've experienced since working but I hope it helps.
