Working with your own children,

I work in the same nursery as two of my children. As our staff are not set to any particular room, it can be really hard to stay professional around them, especially as my 3 year old knows that I can't take her up to her bedroom if she is having a full scale tantrum!! I've been at the nursery for 2 years now and since a new member of staff has joined bringing her little one with her, I thought it might be nice to offer a bit of moral support to those of you on here who also work along side your own children. Be patient, reinforce your setting's behaviour management policy consistently with ALL children and above all, if you find you are struggling, ask for support. Good luck!!

Good to hear you can make it work. We have had to stop staff bringing their own children to nursery because of the problems it can cause, despite the fact the children are split up into different rooms.

My work colleague and business partner Nursery Manager  brought her child to nursery and it worked very well. She never challenged the staff unless it was a problem any parent would react to e.g. her child came one day in a brand new jumper only for a member of staff to lose it. When it turned up someone had written a big 'N' for nursery in the back, assuming it was a gift! Altogether we had  about seven children belonging to staff and it was never a problem as long as the staff worked in a separate room and upheld and indeed trusted the other staff to deal with their children.

we always make sure that new parents are aware of the children that belong to staff so that if a slip up does occur (which is possible ;)) they know that its our own child. We do have another member of staff who works in the kitchen who is awful with her child. The children will be sitting down waiting for everyone else to be ready to eat and she will appear and start feeding hom his dinner!! It annoys me because it really undermines how I try and treat my own children and as I say, she's not a nursery nurse but the chef!!

Nursery World is interested in writing a feature on this issue.

Please could you e-mail me with your contact details if you work at the same nursery as your own children or have experience of this and would be happy to be quoted.

Thanks,
