EYFS in childminding setting
EYFS in childminding setting

I have been a childminder for twenty years plus at the moment Iam studying for the DHC. When I started childminding I thought i was self employed and that all the imput i would have from the goverment would be to check my registration and my first aid. When did i become employed by the goverment as they now tell me from september what I have to do with my children whose parent choose me from a nursery or any other childcare setting as they like what i have on offer. Yes i agree there are some good/bad childminders and this will get rid of the bad but it is also taking away the good childminders. I can see that we will go back to the old days when people did not bother to register and the children were not looked after. As I do not want to become a network childminder my choice I cannot draw down goverment funding but from september I am being forced to complet observation on children that i dont believe I should be doing. IS THERE ANY BODY ELSE OUT THERE who feels the same.

I believe the requirement for observations has been removed for childminders. However it could still be deemed good practice to note development points in your daily diary and use these when thinking of activities and extending play.
The EYFS is no different to the birth to three and foundation stage. Plan your activities and outings as usual and you will find you are meeting most of the requirement. You can they tweak them to attain any you miss out.

Thanks for your reply would love to find out if the observations have been removed. I agree with doing the EYFS but I think that I am not qualified to label a child as we all know children learn and develop at different stages of there life. I wonder where I can find out if the obs have been taken out any idea from who?

I think good childminders will continue to do what they have always done - help children play and learn in safety. If you take the time to read the EYFS there is nothing there that childminders do not do already. Observations/develoment records can always be kept as photos, artwork and anecdotes, just like now. I was a childminder almost 20 years ago (wow - doesn't time fly) and it's so much better now as childminders are regarded as professionals and not just a convenience. A new edition of the EYFS has just been issued, but haven't read it yet.

I am a childminder with almost 21 years experience and feel the same as loopyleanne over the introduction of Eyfs. I have attended the courses over 3 days and the more I heard and learnt, the more I realised I didn't want to be part of this 'experiment' with other peoples children. I have kept my parents informed about the Eyfs and they agree that it is they who should have the responsibility and say on how their children are brought up, not me or any other outsiders, such as Ofsted or the government. My parents (3 teachers, 1 careers officer, a nurse plus 3 others) have written letters to the Secretary of State to get exemptions. I have also applied under Section 46 of the Childcare Act, but if this is not granted for myself or the children then I sadly will give up childminding as I could not be 'a jobs worth person' and would not be able to do my job as happily as I do now.

Hi thanks for your comments please could you tell me more about the exemptions as my parents just like yours DO NOT wish for me to carry out the observation. Yes all good childminders follow the EYFS anyway who is going to use the observation that what i cannot understand parents will file them in a bin playschool dont want them. Childminders should remember if you keep your obs on a computer you have to pay £45 data protection money. Registration fees up insurance money up. Wages up I dont think so. IM sure I have read somewhere the goverment are going against the parents human rights by making us do this what about our human rights as a SELF EMPLOYED person when did I become employed by the goverment and will they now start paying my taxes and stamp i dont think so do you.
