Physical Affection

Hi, I am working in a private day nursery in Ireland with six ten-month-olds to two year olds to one adult. The owner has told us that we are not allowed to pick up the children or have them on our laps as this means that we are sitting down and not doing our jobs properly. Also because it shows favouritism. I find this really difficult as when I sit beside them on the floor they crawl onto my lap and I have to get up and move away unless I am seen with one of them on my lap. Also when they hurt themselves or cry it is hard not to comfort them. I find this really upsetting as I read in books that children need physical closeness, any thoughts?

birth to threes emphasises the importance of closeness and stable relationships with familuar adults. it really upsets me when managers are like that, a nursery i worked at was the same but how would you feel if all you wanted was a hug and the person you went to turned you away.

I've heard that some nurseies are like this, is this due to the fact that they are worried about abuse cases being bought on their companies? I can't think that the parents are happy to leave thier children in a place, espcially so young, where this kind of affection is not given. Do they realise the extent of your managers boundaries?
