I am a nursery owner and oon behalf of my team I am posting this to let off team. I have been a qualified NNEB for 18 years and hold 4 level 4 qualifications and a level 5. I am really fed up with our proffesion constanly being undermined and now ith the government identyfying they want graduates in place i9s totally and utterly demeening our trade, what says theyt will make any difference, if they are just out of uni they probably have had minimal work experience

Hi
I totally agree with you about being angry that the government now want graduates to be involved in early years settings.
I qualified as an NNEB 15 years ago and have a great respect for this qualification and feel it is totally adequate and appropriate for teaching nursery aged children. However, 2 years ago I also completed a PGCE (I did a degree course after my NNEB - but in between that time I have always taught in nursery settings) as I work in a nursery attached to a school I wanted to feel valued as a member of staff as everyone always used to say "oh yes you've only got an NNEB not a 'proper' teaching qualification. It made me so angry as having an NNEB makes you a million times more qualified to teach early years than if you have done a one year course converting a degree to a PGCE. People just don't realise that it is so much harder to teach nursery aged children than it is to teach older kids. It is so frustrating that early years teachers are still viewed as lesser beings (less intelligent too) than teachers of older children. I know lots of people who have never taught nursery aged children who think that it is easy and anyone can do it. But I know myself that I would never presume to go into a Year 2 class and expect to be able to teach them well. I have only ever taught nursery children and this is my area of expertise - so why do other people not respect that?!!!

Oh dear i seem to have ranted and raved a bit now. Sorry but it really is frustrating and I just wanted to agree with you. I also learn't so much more about early years children on my NNEB course 15 years ago than I did doing my PGCE for one year. I enjoyed getting the qualification, but it really doesn't prepare someone who has never been in a class before for the reality of what teaching any group of children really involves.

My nursery plans are on hold for the time being (didn't get the European Grant :(
But wanted to tell you, I did a BTEC Early Years and then A B.Ed primary teaching degree. The BTEC course perpares you much better than a teaching degree - plus am I right to think that the NNEB is a better course than the BTEC.
I simply did the B.Ed just so people can't turn around and say 'she isn't a real teacher'!

i'm coming at this from another perspective. i am a graduate and am having really bad problems looking for employment. no one wants to pay the increased salaries. now i wish i dumped my a levels and degree and went though the nneb route.
