Hi Kay,
I'm in v.early stages of starting a nursery. I will be offering low sick day bonus because staff won't be as ready to take sickies if money are involved. It will save time - not having to phone around to get someone else in. Plus more continuity for children, could get a bit of a mess if Key Workers taking sickies.
Hope these views are of help.

incentives we have:-
wage scale depending on qualifications, so staff can see the benefits of getting higher qualifications.
a choice of pay or time off in lieu for staff meetings, training days and nights etc.
extra day if you are a supervisor.
flexible working eg 4 long days or just mornings or just afternoons.
being able to take bank holidays as unpaid so they get the full 20 days pro rata
(where possible working the other 4 days that week)
time out of the nursery rooms to do paperwork
being asked opinions and for ideas
lockers for bags
3 x full uniforms for a 4 day week
hope this helps.
we have managed to retain staff for years (apart from leaving to look after their own children)
