hi im a student currently working on my NVQ level 2 in CCLD also i am doing key skills communication. one of the points i have to do is give a talk for at least 4 minutes to the children. i work with 2-4 year olds everyday and 0-4 on a friday. can anybody give me ideas of what to do the talk about because i dont see how i can keep a group of 2-4 year olds intrested for 4 minutues without getting them involved or turning it into disscusuion (which is not allowed) any ideas would be great. thanks

Hi
What about telling them a story, maybe a traditional one such as the 3 bears or 3 little pigs.
I used to be a NVQ Training Advisor, so I'm guessing this is for your communication key skills. For this it should really be fine t tell the children a story as long as you are doing it from memory and not reading it from a book. You should still be able to use images to aid you while telling your story though, so I would try and fine some pictures to go with this story, you should be able to find some in a book at your local library, then get them enlarged so they are really easy for the children to see. Enlarging pictures should be fairly cheap to do, and this way all the children won't struggle to push forward to try and see the pictures. As I recall for Key Skills in communication, you used to get more points if you used images anyway.
Hope this is helpful

Hi sugarplumfairy677 I agree with Hatthar, great way is to tell a story using props etc., I saw a good example I think on teachers tv whereby the practitioner used Goldilocks and the 3 bears - used different sized bowls and utensils to promote the story. Another way is to undertake this as a puppet show - this way you are able to communicate to them throughout. Although I find it strange they are not allowed to talk or discuss what they are seeing - Still nothing surprises me anymore!
But good luck.

Hi Mille
I think, if I understand correctly, the reason the children are not allow to talk or ask questions, is that this assessment is for Communication - a Key Skill, not to do with the CCLD NVQ.
Key Skills are a transferables skills, which come as a qualification along side an NVQ in any subject, if you undertake an NVQ free of charge, as part of the Modern Apprenticeship Scheme. Everyone under taking a Modern Apprenticeship Scheme has to undertake a Key Skills qualification, which is normally Application of Number, Information Technology & Communication. Therfore these Key Skills are not particularly aimed at working with children, but are basic skills anyone may need if employed, and would be useful if the person changed profession.
Since the Skill being assessed in the work place is Communication, and the assessment is on a talk given to a group, it could be just as easily, a talk in a staff meeting, to the other team members. It is just that the assessor probably thinks it would be better to get an assessment of you giving a talk to a group of children, because then areas of you CCLD NVQ could probably also be assessed at the same time. However, this assessment is to gague the NVQ candidates skills in Commcunication. It should always be the NVQ candidates choice, what will be assessed, and they should be able to choose whether the talk is to a group of children or to a group of adults.
Good luck sugarplumfairy677 on your assessment, hope it goes well.
