As its been really hot recently our nursery uniforms ( a polo shirt) are unbareable in the heat, does anyone wear any tops that are sleeveless, we have been told its a policy not to wear a vest top type of uniform. We have no air con only fans.

Hi I gave my staff permission to wear vest tops in the same colour as their polo shirts provided they were decent and didnt show any cleavage!! AND as long as they wore their proper uniform polo shirts if they went outside of the nursery with the children. Staff were delighted with this and as I have been a NN myself I appreciated how hot staff can get and what effect this can have on their work etc. HOWEVER my line manager (not operations manager as we are not part of a chain) decided that it didnt look professional and the girls had to go back to wearing polo shirts, yes I argued the point with him but he wouldn't listen, girls of course were not happy but did it. Personally I would rather have comfortable happy, staff who look professional outside of the nursery and yes by the way they did look professional, vest all the same colour style etc and decent. You cant win!!!

Thanx for your reply, most helpfull. My manager and myself a deputy have decided to let the girls wear vest tops during the hot weather and as the guy who owns it is out of the country on his hols we will get his decision when he returns. We have asked the parents and they say they are happy for us to wear vest tops.

Oh goodness you are so lucky. Where I work we HAVE TO wear a nurses tunic, which is more hot than the polo shirts we used to wear.
Also I have a skin condition so have to wear my navy blue fleece during all weather. Needless to say I am suffering from heat exhaustion.

Ha ha ha!!! When in reality staff shouldn't be wearing long sleaves at all - lol - for hygiene reasons!!

Perhaps suggesting a change in uniform is at hand?

I think the nurses tunics are hot to wear during the summer. As my last nursery I worked at I was provide with a nurses tunic. Then when I moved to my current nursery I have been provide with a polo shirt and sweatshirt with the nursery logo on. The polo shirt can still be hot to wear but it is much better than a nurses tunic. The nursery I am working at is working on a idea of doing vests and sleeveless tops for next summer. Paul.

Hi Thought you would all like to know that my boss has relented because of the extremely hot weather (I quoted the TGWU recommendation that office dress code should be relaxed given how extremely hot the weather is just now), he has said yes to vest tops (though only in the colour of the polo shirt), not revealing and only to be worn in the nursery, if they take the children out then the polo shirts have to be worn. A very ggod compromise I think!!
