Fathers Day cards - 22-05-06 05:16

I know that its very politically correct to think about children who have no fathers on fathers day - and of course care should be taken to make sure they do not feel left out or inadequate. But please - should we now not make any cards - ever - at all - just in case some children don't have mothers, fathers, etc. That means the children who do have significant parents in thier lives don't get to celebrate that fact because one or two others don't have them. In our nursery we make cards for all occasions, children that do not have a mother/father/do not celebrate Eid/Xmas etc are chatted to, to explain what we are doing and if they would like to think of someone they can make a card for or to make one for a different occasion or just make a special picture for someone special in their lives. I really hate all this "lets not do anything in case we offend someone" Children are extremly understanding, we often pre-empt how they are going to feel before we even give them all the facts to decide for themselves. We don't give them enough credit. Explaining issues to children and giving them all the facts about why something is happening usually works really well. They might have questions of their own to ask and a discussion can arise. But lets not take the fun out of celebrating special days.
