Formal PE lessons - 27-03-06 04:09

by: habibi

Hi I work in a nursery attatched to a Primary school. We have been approached by our co-ordinater about the nursery having formal PE lessons from the PE departement. We already have a PE lesson which I take myself. It is often linked to our theme and involves music and dance as well as ball skills and ring games. I am really set against them having a formal PE lesson. I don't think that its necessary yet. They can do it next year in Reception and then they'll be doing it for the rest of their school lives? Am I wrong in not wanting them to have formal PE lessons. I just feel that their nursery year should be more flexible and an introduction to what school life will be like. The PE staff are making us out to be
the baddies - not wanting the children to exercise and have PE lessons - but we do already do it so its not like they are not doing any PE at all. Would be grateful for some persuasive arguments that I can use for not having formal PE lessons. (Plus i heard a rumour that they only approached us because they have a new member of staff coming and they need to fill up their timetable - so they thought of the nursery as its the only year they don't teach!!!)
Any thoughts would be gratefully recieved. Thanks
